Except for their slightly larger size, it's very difficult to tell Africanized bees from others in the Apis mellifera family.

Africanized

Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera scutella), sometimes called killer bees, are well known for being more moody and defensive than other honeybees. The good news is that they do not live as far north as Canada. Yes, our cold winters have some good points!

They are great honey producers and have good resistance to disease, but also have a high swarming rate.
